"BELFAST MAN'S LIFE FOR HIS SON
A fathers heroism in an effort to save his son, whom he thought was on the top story of his burning house,
resulted in the death of Mr James Dummigan, a Belfast grocer, who resided at 340 Donnegal Road.
The outbreak of the fire took place before five o'clock on Monday morning and Mr Dummigan succeded in getting
his wife and three of their children out of the burning building. It was then found that his son, James, was missing and Mr Dummigan,
beliving that he was still in his bedroom at the top of the house, dashed into the burning building and attempted to mount the staircase,
which was by this time was well alight. he struggled on to the second floor, where he was apparently overcome by fumes, as his dead body,
much charred, was eventually found in a huddled heap on the floor.
The son in the meantime had escaped from the doomed building. percieving the blazing staircase, and thinking that escape by that way
was out of the question, james proceeded through the dormer window to the roof and reached the street through the adjoining house.
it was due to Mr Dummigan's promptitude and energy that the other members of his family were not burned to death.
